Un clocher dont la flèche est en spirale est aussi appelé clocher flammé. Il en existe 82 en Europe dont 33 en France. Pour certains spécialistes l'origine de cette curieuse apparence est attribuée aux forces de la nature, pour d'autres à la volonté du constructeur et pour les plus imaginatifs à des interventions surnaturelles.
L'église de Saint Cômes d'Olt (Aveyron) fut construite de 1522 à 1532. Le bâtisseur, Antoine Salvanh, était sans doute le plus expérimenté de son temps. Son clocher flammé est donc l'œuvre réfléchie et très bien réalisée d'un architecte de grand talent.
